Hemodialysis Section
In June 1984, the first Hemodialysis Unit in Sarawak was established at Lau King Howe Hospital, located in the Gynecology Ward. The unit began with two Cobe Century Hemodialysis Machines and one Decolonize water treatment system. It was initiated by Dr. Chew Peng Hong, assisted by Staff Nurse Goh King Eng, the first dialysis-trained renal staff, and later joined by dialysis-trained Medical Assistant Johnny Cheng.
Initially, the unit provided treatment for chronic stable renal failure patients before expanding its services to acute renal failure cases in the mid-1980s. From 1985, Sibu was permitted to train and manage its own hemodialysis patients for both center-based and home dialysis.
In 1990, the unit was relocated to a wooden building between the Post-Natal Ward and Rejang Ward, with additional hemodialysis machines and a Reverse Osmosis water treatment system introduced to improve treatment quality. The service continued to expand with the arrival of Sarawak抯 first full-fledged Nephrologist, Dr. Simon Wong Ching King, in 1990, followed by Dr. Clare Tan in 2004. By 2007, the Sibu Hospital Hemodialysis Unit had eight trained renal staff caring for 65 patients.
